Since February 2018, ACCIONA and Nueva Atacama -previously called Aguas Chañar- have been linked by a supply contract for 100% renewable electricity supplies to the main facilities of the Chilean company, which produces and distributes drinking water, and the collection, treatment and handling of wastewater in the Atacama region.
The PPA was signed with a long-term horizon and the objective of covering more than 70% of Nueva Atacama’s requirements in the region for consumption in a number of its facilities.
This 100% renewable supply will avoid the emission 26,500 tonnes of CO2 from thermal power stations to the atmosphere every year, according to the current energy mix of Chile.
All the energy provided by ACCIONA will come from the company’s renewables plants in Chile. At the end of the first semester of 2021 it had 312 MW of wind power and 577 MW of photovoltaic capacity in a number of generation plants.
Nueva Atacama, the exclusive concession holder for end-to-end water cycle services in in the Atacama Region, produces and distributes drinking water and undertakes the collection, treatment and handling of wastewater in the area. It provides a service to more than 270,000 people (at the time of signing the contract) in nine municipalities in the Region and has 13 drinking water treatment plants and 9 wastewater plants located there.
